Why Fishing

When playing a MMORPG like Lord of the Rings Online you may sometimes want to be your self or just relax with something other than killing mobs. This is what fishing in Lotro provides: A way for you to relax and let your mind go. There are benefits as well as you progress. The fish you catch can be used in various recipes and you can get your trophy fish up on the wall for all to see and then ofcourse there is the gold that can be had. It may not be the most profitable way to spend your time but if you enjoy it there is some gold to be made. So grab your gear and read on.

Getting started

In order to get started you will need to visit one of the four Hobby Masters: Estmar Bolger, Haldúr, Henry Oakeshott or Refkell. Click on the links to see where they are located and find the one closest to you. If your character has at least level 5 the Hobby Masters will provide you with a Basic Fishing Pole and get your training started. Also be aware that all the hobby masters start a quest, might as well get it done as this will lead you to the Fishing Suppliers.

When you have trained with one of the Hobby Masters take a look at your Hobby Panel. The hobby panel is a tab in your character journal and will let you know how you progress as a fisher. You will see a status bar that as you progress will get more and more full. At the time of writing you can have between 1 and 200 proficiency points. If you let your mouse hover over the bar you will see the exact amount of points you have. Later you will see how you get more points.

The hobby panel will also instruct you how to equip the hobby. "To equip a hobby, drag it from the Hobbies Panel to an available quickslot at the bottom of the game screen."

All you need to do now is to equip a fishing pole and you are all ready to start fishing.

How to fish

To fish, you will need to locate a body of water and this could be almost any body of water. Ponds, lakes, rivers, streams, marshes and bogs, grottos will all work. You can even fish from bridges, but be aware that if a bridge is to high you will not be able cast your line. The bridge must be low to the water.

Water from which you may not fish includes wells, fountains, buckets, small puddles, "invisible water" (where you can hear the splash but see only land), and waterfalls when facing directly into the waterfalls (it is recognized as facing the land behind the waterfall, or open air behind the waterfall). You must be clear of obstacles, so you need to avoid logs and rocks when casting. You can walk into the water to fish, but don't go to far out. The moment you start swimming instead of walking you will not be able to fish.

When you have found the right spot and are ready to cast, click the Fishing Action button once. This will cast your line and you will hear a small sound effect. If you watch the water, you will see fish moving around the bobber just under the surface or even breaking the surface of the water. Eventually a fish will tug on your line, and you will see the bobber drop below the water and your fishing pole bow. Your stance will also change. Click the Fishing Action button one more time and you will reel in your catch. You have a limited time in which to click the Fishing Action button once you have a bite. If you don't click the button in time, you will not catch anything. If you don't click the button at all, after a short while you will automatically reel in with nothing.

You will be able to use The Fishing Action button almost emidiately as it has a very short cooldown. If you click the button too quickly you may receive the warning that the hobby is not ready yet. Pause for a second then click the Fishing Action button again to cast your line once again.

If when fishing you are attacked the fishing will be interrupted and you will be able to fight back.

How to advance

Basically you advance by catching fish. The more fish you catch, the more your fishing proficiency will increase. As you increase your proficiency you will be able to catch additional types of higher level fish, but, as your proficiency increases, you will no longer advance your profiencency by catching the low level fish you used to. This means you will will have to rely upon fish of a higher level in order to advance. In order to see what to catch check out what level the fish are with this list of fish

When you catch your first fish, a goldfish, if you have tutorial hints turned on you will see the Hobbies: Proficiencies window. This informs you of the following: "You just increased your proficiency in a hobby! As your skill increases you will open up the possibility of obtaining new or better outcomes. There may be a limit to how many times a hobby can be increased per day."

Besides fish you can also catch a lot of junk. This will not help you advance your fishing profiency. There is not really any way to avoid catching junk so better get used to it.

Each day your fishing proficiency may increase a fixed number of points also known as the daily maximum. Every day after the first has a daily maximum of 10 points. The first time you reach your daily maximum in a hobby proficiency you will see the Hobbies: Daily Maximum window. This informs you of the following: "Every hobby has a maximum daily proficiency and you have reached that maximum in of your hobbies. You can check your current status in any given hobby by opening the character journal and selecting the Hobby panel.

When you reach your daily maximum proficiency, your proficiency bar color will change from blue to yellow.

Now What

Now that you have learned the basic of fishing you can go more or less anywhere. All the fish in Lord of the Rings Online is possible to catch in any body of water. That is except for a few special fish. Check out the page Fish to see what can be caught.

Disciples of the Land is online

Hi fellow fans of online role playing games. I have now started a new homepage called Disciples of the Land.com. This site is dedicated to fishing, mining and harvesting in the upcoming Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV). We are going to try to get a complete database of all the resources in the game and all recipes utilizing these resources. So far there is not much information to find at the site. Two reasons for this. 1: We are not allowed to give out information about the game yet and 2: we are not in the beta SIGH. So we are guessing at how the structure of the information is going to be and trying to get as far as we can before the release in September. We would love it if you would join the discussion at the forum and I hope you will find some information that you may find interesting.
